Five hundred neon kilometers of glass and orchard, sealed over a meteorite scar that split Earth’s crust six centuries ago. Built by House Vale. Run on Spire energy. Read by the Ledger.
§ 01Overview▾
Chroma Colony is a sealed surface settlement built into the Vesper L5 strike site on Earth, anchored across five hundred neon kilometers of mirrored dome and orchard tier. Population at last reconciliation: 4.2 million registered colonists, plus an unfiled count in the Underbelly the Ledger declines to publish.
The colony was commissioned in CE 2401 under the Founding Compact, with the explicit mandate to seal the impact zone, recover the technology in its lower strata, and harden the surface against orbital piracy. House Vale held the charter then. House Vale holds it now.
Colonists call it "five hundred kilometers of glass." Outsiders call it "the Castle and the Cracks." Both are accurate. Both undersell it.
§ 02The Fracture Event▾
In the public record, the Fracture Event names the strike. Sometime in late CE 2389 — the atmospheric date is contested; the seismic date is not — an exotic meteorite broke Earth’s atmosphere at oblique angle and impacted the Vesper L5 latitude. The strike vaporized two hundred surface kilometers, opened five communicating chasms into the crust, and exposed strata that did not match Earth’s geological record.
The strata held technology. Pre-human technology, by every dating method that survives. Lattice-grown alloys, energy media that did not decay on contact with atmosphere, and a structural language the colony’s metallurgists are still translating six centuries later. The Catalytic Spire is built around one such lattice; the colony’s nightside light is drawn off its residual field.
House Vale dates the term differently. They reserve "Fracture Event" for the cascade decompression three centuries after the strike, when the chasms went unstable and nearly tore the dome open from below — and the ranking System Lord ordered them sealed with personnel still inside. Both readings are filed in the Ledger under FE. Both reduce to the same chasms. The public Codex defaults to the strike.
§ 03Geography▾
The colony lies along five vertical tiers, each tied by service lift and tariff gate. A colonist’s standing is most accurately read by the tier they live on.
Upper Hab-Domes — the Castle. Artificial sun on a thirteen-hour cycle, pristine air recyclers, Vale jurisdiction in totality. The Colonial Administration and the Vale residence sit on the apex ring. Hab-Dome Seven is the operational dome at current cycle.
Catalytic Spire District — the apex needle. Technically Vale jurisdiction; operationally a Vontacreed concession. The Spire draws ancient-tech energy off the L5 lattice and meters it back across every other tier at a tariff that has not been renegotiated in eighty cycles.
Low-Grav Promenade — Deck 7. A custom gravitational gradient maintained off Spire energy: low enough to launch a scooter off a curb, heavy enough to keep a glass on a table. House Kalyx market rights, the Sphere Bar, jade-lit kiosks, Neon Beach Radio’s broadcast tower.
Mid-Levels — the corporate-matte buffer. Vale-policed, Conglomerate-administered. Most colonists never have professional cause to leave it.
The Chasms — the L5 strike voids below the colony floor. Officially sealed. Operationally not. The Underbelly trades through them; ancient-tech salvage exits through them; the Vales walk them only with full House Guard.
§ 04Government▾
Chroma Colony is governed by the House System, codified in the Founding Compact and amended only twice in six centuries.
A System Lord holds the ruling charter. The seat is hereditary by Vale internal succession; the Compact does not technically restrict the seat to House Vale, but no other house has ever held it for longer than a single Iron Oath cycle.
Below the System Lord, the major houses hold demarcated jurisdictions: House Vale (Upper Hab-Domes, Colonial Administration, the Iron Oath Armadas), House Kalyx (Low-Grav Promenade market rights, neural-economy R&D), Vontacreed (Catalytic Spire concession, ancient-tech logistics), the Midas Group (Freight Spiral East, off-colony shipping). Lesser houses operate under tariff to one of the four.
Day-to-day governance runs out of the Colonial Administration at the Castle and is filed continuously into the Ledger. The Ledger is the legal record of the colony — debt, standing, conviction, marriage, death, license. It is not a metaphor. It is the document. Power, in the colony, is the right to read from it and the right to write to it.
§ 05Economy▾
Three streams. They overlap; the Ledger separates them.
Ancient-tech trade. The dominant stream. Salvage from the chasms passes through Vontacreed-licensed cataloguing at the Spire base, gets graded, and either enters the colony’s industrial supply or ships off-colony through Midas freight. The exotic alloys are not reproducible. The market is finite. The houses fight over it in calibrated, deniable ways.
Spire energy. The Catalytic Spire draws residual field off the L5 lattice and meters it across the tiers. Vontacreed runs the meter. Every dome light, every dome’s air, and every kiosk in the Promenade is on the same tariff. A Spire outage is a colony-wide event; one has not happened in the current cycle.
Promenade commerce. The Low-Grav Promenade hosts the kiosk economy, Kalyx tab-slip currency, the Sphere Bar and a thousand smaller venues, the Catalytic Crust Kitchen line, and the merch trade tied to the colony’s broadcast culture. House Kalyx underwrites it. House Vale taxes it. The Ledger reconciles it.
§ 06Culture▾
The colony broadcasts. Neon Beach Radio runs a twenty-four-hour station out of the Low-Grav Promenade, Deck 7 — synthwave rotation by night, OVA orchestrals at first light, every NBC single in heavy on the same day it ships. The signal carries across all five tiers and bleeds out through the Spire to whatever orbit cares to listen. Most colonists have heard the bumper longer than they’ve heard their own surname.
Nightlife clusters in the Promenade and along the orchard rim. The Sphere Bar at Deck 7 is the Heir’s standing perch; Catalytic Crust Kitchen runs hot late; the Grand Electron Casino throws magenta across a city block. The night does not end so much as get rotated through the dome lighting cycle.
The class divide is geographic and absolute. Up the lift: artificial sun, recycled clean air, the Castle. Down the lift: Mid-Level matte, Promenade noise, the Underbelly inside the chasm rim. A Castle colonist may live a full life without ever taking the lift below Deck 12. An Underbelly colonist may take the lift up exactly twice — once to file with the Ledger, once at funeral. The Ledger does not editorialize. The Ledger reads.
§ 07Current Status▾
CE 2650, Cycle 04. Hab-Dome Seven is the operational dome. Iron Oath Armadas are in calibrated rotation; the Spire meter is steady; the chasm seals are filed clean.
House Vale is at full standing in the Ledger. The Kalyx response is open in the Ledger. Vontacreed concessions on the Spire are unrenegotiated. Midas freight is on schedule.
Public broadcast continues uninterrupted. Neon Beach Radio is on the air.
