The military house that built and rules Chroma Colony. Absolute, not cruel. Memory is the currency the Vales mint, and the Ledger is the book they read it from.
§ 01Overview▾
House Vale is the military and colonial-rule house that founded Chroma Colony — the orbital O’Neill cylinder habitat anchored at the Vesper L5 point. The Vales sit at the Upper Hab-Domes, the artificial-sunlight tier the Underbelly calls "the Castle." They keep the Iron Oath Armadas in standing rotation and run the Colonial Administration from the same offices that mint the Ledger.
Motto, as carried on the Father’s lapel pin: "The Ledger Closes."
The house is absolute, not cruel. A target marked for vitrification is given the courtesy of a sealed siege first; the Vales would rather wait years than fire wide.
§ 02History▾
House Vale’s charter predates the colony itself. The Founding Compact installed the first Vale as System Lord during the Vesper L5 commissioning, with the explicit mandate to defend the cylinder against the same orbital piracy that had collapsed three earlier habitats.
The Vales do not date themselves to the founding. They date themselves to the Fracture Event — the cascade decompression on the lower-tier chasms that nearly tore the cylinder open. The reigning Vale of that cycle ordered the chasms sealed with personnel still inside. The colony survived. The Ledger thickened. The phrase "written somewhere" enters house liturgy from that day forward.
From the Fracture Event onward, every System Lord Vale takes the Iron Oath: that they will spend any line item to keep the cylinder whole. Edric Vale is the seventh to do so.
§ 03Territory▾
The Upper Hab-Domes — the Castle — are Vale-administered in totality. Artificial sun, pristine air recyclers, and the only district on the cylinder where you can see the curvature of the deck without a service lift.
The Mid-Levels (the corporate-matte buffer) are Vale-policed through the Colonial Administration, but day-to-day governance is leased to the Conglomerate.
Vale presence in the Low-Grav Promenade and Neon City is limited to House Guard patrols and Iron Oath enforcement actions. The Catalytic Spire and Freight Spiral East are technically under Vale jurisdiction but are operationally controlled by Vontacreed and the Midas Group respectively — a debt the Vales let stand, for now.
§ 04Key Figures▾
System Lord Edric Vale — "The Father." Sixty-fourth System Lord. Carries the Iron Oath in its current form. His public posture is exactly his private posture: the Ledger is the only document that matters and grief is not exempt from accounting. He authored the response to the Kalyx incursion on his Heir’s eighteenth.
The Heir of Vale — protagonist of the current cycle. Identity is withheld in the public Codex; House Guards refer to him as "the Heir" in any unsecured channel. Civilian standing as of last filing; will progress to retainer and possibly Knight before the cycle closes.
The Adjutant — the House Guard who pulled the Heir from the Kalyx blast. Promoted out of rotation; now travels with the Heir as standing escort. By Act 4 his shoulder will carry the Vale signet openly. He is not named in the public Codex.
§ 05The Vale Crest▾
A broken chain, held taut, wrapped around a stylized sword. Some readings substitute the sword for a single fixed star — both are canonical; the older Iron Oath uses the sword, the modern Colonial Administration uses the star.
The field is deep navy. The chain and sword are matte silver. No ornament, no scrollwork, no motto on the crest itself — Vale heraldry treats decoration as a security risk.
The crest appears on the Father’s lapel pin, House Guard shoulder patches, the Heir’s signet ring (worn from the day of his eighteenth), and the unlit corner of every Vale corporate tower at the Upper Hab-Domes ring.
§ 06Relationship to House Kalyx▾
House Kalyx — operating publicly as the Calyx Meridian Group — is Vale’s peer rival. Kalyx runs the neural-economy R&D arm and the "wellness companion" product line, including the Vervain Companion OS, the so-called Girlfriend App.
The two houses do not share a battlefield. Kalyx tested Vale’s coverage during an unsanctioned-date gap on the Heir’s eighteenth and closed a line item — the Vervain product the Heir had been seeing was Kalyx’s own, ledgered as acceptable loss the moment she shipped.
Vale’s response is calibrated, not declared. Through the next cycle the house will retire Kalyx leverage points one at a time without giving Kalyx the standing to claim Vale started a war. The phrase used in private is "the Ledger closes itself."
§ 07Current Status · RESTRICTED▾
CE 2650, Cycle 04. House Vale is at full standing. Iron Oath Armadas are in calibrated rotation; no open declarations. The Father is in residence at the Castle. The Heir is in the field with his Adjutant.
The Vervain incident is closed in the Ledger. The Kalyx response is open in the Ledger. House Guard standing orders include the Heir as a primary asset; House Guard rules of engagement around the Heir are restricted from this Codex tier.
